During the last few days of the Ganesh festival celebrations in Miraj, a town in western Maharashtra, festering tensions gave way to arson and rioting. These riots spread like wild fire throughout western Maharashtra. Cities like Sangli,Kolhapur,Satara,Solapur,Ichalkaranji and adjoining rural areas got engulfed in communal violence. Curfew has been imposed in many areas and the situation is still very tense. One might wonder as to what might be the reason behind this seemingly sudden eruption of violence in a generally peaceful region. A welcome arch depicting the slaying of Afzalkhan by Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj was erected by a local Ganesh Mandal. Afzalkhan was a general in the Adilshahi court of Bijapur who had invaded Swarajya with the motive of assassinating Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj. मिरज येथे गणपति उत्सवाच्या शेवटच्या काही दिवसात तणावाची स्थिति उत्पन्न होउन त्याचे रूपांतर दंगलीत झाले. त्याचे लोण पूर्ण पश्चिम महाराष्ट्रभर पसरले. सांगली, कोल्हापूर, इचलकरंजी, सातारा,सोलापूर इत्यादि शहरे आणि ग्रामीण भागामध्ये हिंसाचार आणि जाळपोळीच्या घटना घडल्या. अजुनही वातावरण पूर्णतः शांत झालेले नसून काही ठिकाणी संचारबंदी लागू आहे. या सर्व गोष्टींना कारण काय घडले? मिरज शहरामध्ये एका सार्वजनिक गणेश मंडळाने अफझलखान वधाची कमान उभारली. ती कमान उभी करण्यास आधी पोलिस व जिल्हा प्रशासनाने परवानगी नाकारली होती, परंतु नंतर ती परवानगी देण्यात आली. त्यानंतर, अनंत चतुर्दशीच्या आदल्या दिवशी मिरजेत मुस्लिम जमावाने निदर्शने केली. या गोष्टीला कारण ती कमान ठरली. त्या जमावाला उत्तर म्हणुन हिंदू जमाव एकत्रित झाला आणि दगडफेक सुरु झाली. पोलिसांनी लाठीमार सुरु केला. पळून जाता जाता त्या मुस्लिम जमावातिल काही माथेफिरूंनी एका गणेश मंडळाच्या गणेशमूर्तीवर दगडफेक करून मूर्तीची विटंबना केली. त्या नंतर भडकलेल्या दंगलीत अनेक गणेशमूर्तिंची तोडफोड आणि विटंबना करण्यात आली. या बातम्या वेगाने पसरल्या आणि त्याचे रूपा
